Friday Gardening: A Garden's A Garden, No Matter How Small

Even if the only space you have is a window sill, you can grow something!  Next time you buy green onions at the store, try replanting them to get more for your money.

Cut off the green tops about 1 inch above the root end and use the tops as desired. Plant the root ends in a small container of potting soil and place it in your kitchen window to grow more green tops.  Cut the tops and use them as needed.

Day 2:

Day 4:

Day 7:

**********

We have germination!  The seeds we started last Sunday in the growing shelf started showing signs of life on Wednesday.  Today most have germinated.  We have wee sprouts of broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, pole beans and two kinds of peas.  These are the early spring veggies that will be moved outside as soon as we can get the garden beds ready.  Soon we'll be starting seeds for late spring/early summer planting.

The herbs haven't germinated yet, and I think that they may be too warm and moist in the growing shelf (my understanding is that most herbs like to struggle a bit), but I have yet to convince Shane of that.

What a cool idea with the onions! I dont' have much of a garden, but I can't wait until it's warm enough to dig in the dirt!

Awesome! I've read that about the onions before but never tried it. I will definitely give this a shot.
