Where'd My Week Go?

I start each week with the best of intentions. This week I had planned to write several new blog posts, do some spring cleaning and gardening, work on some sewing and crochet projects, read, try new recipes and keep busy and productive in general.

At the end of each week, I never feel as if I've accomplished much. That's not to say I feel as if I didn't do anything, just that I didn't do as much as I would have liked. At the beginning of this past week, I think my biggest obstacle was too much time spent on the computer playing games and messing around with Facebook. Yesterday afternoon and today, I've been in the mood to be productive, but I have caught a cold (or it might be allergies) and it's slowing me down.

No use dwelling on the things I haven't done, though, when I can focus on the things I have done this week.

We met our new cat. We actually adopted her from our local Human Society shelter last Friday, but she wasn't comfortable coming out of hiding until early this week.

She is a 5-month-old Maine Coon mix that we named Swiper (if you have kids who are Dora fans, you'll understand the name). If anyone wants to know more about why we couldn't keep our baby kitten, email me and I'll tell you the entire story. However, I won't be writing about it here.

I met a new friend. She lives nearby, but we "met" through the goodreads website. We met in person yesterday by having a nice lunch together. Sharon makes some amazing quilts, which you can see on her blog, Quiltgranny's Shoe.

The weather and Shane's work schedule have kept us from making any progress with our raised garden beds. In other words, the pile of dirt is still in our front yard. I did manage to plant seeds yesterday afternoon, though.

The egg cartons contain green beans, zucchini, cucumbers, green bell peppers, mild yellow peppers, Swiss chard, spinach, and collard greens. The yogurt cups contain basil, oregano, thyme, cilantro and catnip. I'm not sure all of these will transplant successfully, but I have plenty of seeds to plant directly into the beds if they don't. We will also be planting two kinds of lettuce, radishes, onions and tomatoes directly into the beds once they are built.

I made quite a bit of progress in planning a potluck family picnic scheduled for the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. It will be held at Truman State Park, but Shane and I are "hosting", in that it was our idea. I now know who will be there and what foods they'll be bringing. I also now know that I may have been a little insane ambitious when I said we'd bring both burgers and fish. A fish fry 90 miles from home? What was I thinking?

Tomorrow morning Kat will have a friend over to play for a few hours, and on Sunday, we are taking Kat and two of her cousins close to her age to CoCo Key water park. This is a belated Christmas gift for Kat that we've put off for one reason or another for four months. Yesterday I finally used the gift certificate I'd bought in December to purchase tickets -- which are good only this Sunday. It was about an hour later that I realized I was coming down with a bug of some kind.

That's why it's so important that I also work a nice healing nap into my schedule for this afternoon. I think I'm going to schedule one for tomorrow afternoon, too.

I hope you're feeling better in time for Saturday.

I've used the egg cartons for the last two years to plant seedlings and if they're the recycled greyish cardboardy variety (they look like they might be) then you can just set the whole thing in a tray of water, wait until the cartons are well soakked and break off each one and plant in the ground, egg carton an all. It saves handling the seedlings and risking damaging them. More of my seedlings seem to have transplanted successfully since I started doing that.
