Birthdays and Bargains In Unexpected Places

Today isn't just Independence Day. It's also Kat's birthday! In that spirit, I'd like to wish everyone a happy day, whatever the celebration may be.

In the spirit of the blog, I want to share the birthday bargain I found a couple of days ago. Having not yet decided what to get Kat for her birthday, I stopped at a nearby Gordman's. Gordman's doesn't carry a wide selection of toys, but their prices are so good on the toys they do carry, I thought it was worth checking them out.

Gordman's slogan is "something unexpected". For them to carry a large item, such as a bike, is very unexpected. But they did have one, and it was an amazing price. The sticker said the 16-inch Barbie bike retailed for $77.00, but that Gordman's price was $49.00. But the box was slightly damaged (I could tell the bike inside couldn't possibly have been damaged, though), so it was marked down to $37.00. We'd been toying with the idea of a new bike for Kat; at that price, the decision was made. But it gets better. The store was taking an additional 33% off all clearance merchandise. The bike rang up at $24.79!

It took Shane about an hour to assemble the bike, and with that comes the peace of mind knowing it was assembled correctly and not by some stock boy in a hurry to get off work.

Kat loves it! And so do we.

What an AWESOME deal! Happy birthday to Kat...too cute. I've seen Gordmans in Denver, but never quite knew what they were - I'll have to check them out someday.

Can I ask a ? in your comments? ;-) What do you recommend on cheap apartment linoleum floors to strip/thoroughly clean? Mine are a little yellowed in spots with dirt 'stuck' in some of the pothole little places (high traffic)...thank you!

Tug: Gordman's used to be called 1/2-Price Store, and that's usually what you can expect to pay. They are, IMO, somewhat like Kohl's, only less expensive.

On the floor, I would first try Oxy-Clean. Make a thin paste with it and water and scrub with a brush or scrubby, then rinse really well. It's a lot of work, but we did it on a floor once (after living in the house a few years) and the clean floor underneath was completely different than we thought. If I can find the pics (pre-digital age), I'll try to scan and post them.

If that doesn't work, especially for the yellowing, I'd use straight ammonia. It's harsh, but it usually works well. Be sure to ventilate and take breaks away from it.

Once the floor's clean, I'd avoid using products like Shine or Mop & Glo. Those will cause the buildup again.
