Hi, I'm Annie...And I'm Unemployed

When we last saw Annie on her previous blogs, she was slated to begin a new job cooking for hungry college kids.

Meeehhh....wrong answer.

That didn't quite work out. To make a long story not quite so long, they wanted me to work more Saturdays than I was able (let alone, willing) to work. We have no Saturday daycare, so one of us would have to stay home. Shane was being asked to work Saturdays at the same time, and his wage is so much better than mine was, or likely will ever be, that his job won.

Not to mention that its damn hard to make cornbread for 300 or homemade frosting for sheet cakes when your boss won't bother to order cornmeal or powdered sugar.

Too bad, because I had friendly and fun co-workers and it could've been a great job. It just wasn't.

I'll admit that I haven't been as aggressive as I should be at finding another job. I need to find one soon, but my biggest obstacle is that I love being here at home.

The other question is "Do you gain more from working or staying home?" That's a tough question, especially with children involved.

My wife and I have decided that while we could make more money with both of us working, we gain more with her staying home. It's a tough road to go, it's hard to make it in todays world on one income.

Dadguy: Do you always ask the tough questions? :)

I've had a few different jobs in my life, and none of them were as rewarding as staying at home, even before we took on the responsibility of raising Kat.

I think we gain more with me staying home in terms of the health of our marriage, my physical and mental well-being, and the non-financial support I can give to the family.

Financially, we are "just making it". There is no room in our budget for emergency expenses, major home improvements, vacations or larger unexpected purchases. Funding these things is what I'd be working for if I went back to work. They are important things, no doubt.

I'm hoping I can take care of them either by taking on a part-time or a full-time seasonal job instead of the 40-hour-a-week gig. Maybe then I can have the best of both worlds.

Well, that sucks. And it's awesome! Maybe your job is to try to be the homemaker that you are pinching pennies and taking care of Shane and Kat and yourself. Y'know.

I try and ask the questions that matter, at least for me. (But yeah, they usually are tough questions because... they matter. =) )

Sounds like you know what you're looking for. Finding it will be the tough part.

Dadguy: Many people have been questioning whether going back to work (outside the home) is the right move for me. My dad thinks that between what I can save buy staying home and what I can make from eBay or similar resale sources, I'd be better off staying home.

Several friends of mine are encouraging me to stay home, too. And it's what Shane and I both want, but not at the risk of getting ourselves in deep trouble again.

Maybe I just need to do more soul-seeking on the subject.
