Monday Morning Chit Chat - Rainy Day Edition

Happy rainy Monday! I wonder if your weekend was as wet as ours. After having about 4" of rain last Tuesday, and barely avoiding a flooded basement when the power went out, we had even more rain over the weekend. Our rain gauge had a little over three inches on Saturday and Weatherbug is showing that we had more than 5 inches overnight last night. Our total for June (per Weatherbug) is a crazy 15 inches!! Needless to say, our rain catchment system, as well as any other sizable bucket or barrel we have, is full now. Who knows when we'll need that water? At this rate, not for a while.

Saturday we visited my parents for a few hours. My mom has a condition called bronchiectasis, which was initially caused from scarring in her lungs from a case of whooping cough she had when she was a toddler. She's 77 now and not doing very well. She has other problems as well, most of them stemming from the lung condition.  She stayed in her nightgown and robe during our entire visit, which is something I've never seen her do before, so I know she really isn't feeling well these days. :(

My dad, on the other hand, was as peppy as ever, and took us around their lawn, digging up lots of perennial plants for us to bring home and plant.

We didn't stay long, and tried to get them to go to lunch with us, but Mom didn't feel like it and Dad wouldn't leave her alone, so we left early and headed back home, stopping for lunch and a couple of flea markets on the way.  Once home, we planted some of the living things we'd brought from Mom and Dad's yard, then had a short visit from Shane's mom and step-dad.

Yesterday we planted the rest of our goodies between rain showers.  I don't know the names of all of the plants we brought back, but once they are established, I'll try to get pictures of them.

Today I'll be working on cleaning my kitchen and dining area.  I usually do alright with maintenance cleaning, but eventually things get out of hand and I have to spend several days cleaning the house room by room to get it back in shape.  I call that zone cleaning (a la Flylady), and I'm going into zone mode this week because the house is driving me crazy.

In addition to zone work, I'll have garden work this week.  Some of the zucchinis are almost ready to cut, and I'm sure there are green beans to be picked.  I may be able to pull a beet or two this week as well.

What will you be doing this week?  Also, just for fun, what's your favorite rainy day song?  I can think of a lot of them, from Led Zeppelin's "Rain Song" to Ronnie Milsap's "Smoky Mountain Rain".  And for some reason, I always think of "Summer Breeze" by Seals & Crofts.  I don't think it even mentions rain, but it still gives me a rainy day feeling.  But those are all oldies.  Anyone have anything new?

Rainy Days and Mondays by The Carpenters - fits the bill both ways today. Vacation over, so back to work, and rainy - might have to fit in a lunch hour nap. I love pretty much anything by The Carpenters. Now I will have to drag out some old tapes today.

When the kids were little we would take our shoes off and run through the rain singing, Singing In the Rain.

This week we have lunch with a friend today, homeschooling groups on Tuesday and Thursday, and work.

Enjoy your week and thanks for sharing your life with all of us!

The first thing that popped into my mind was Rainy Days and Mondays too. I'm sorry to hear about your mom. It sounds like you'll have a busy week. I am going to work on getting the laundry room cleaned out so I can get that painted then we want to get some cabinets and a counter-top to put across from the washer and dryer--don't know if that is in the budget right now though. So--I'll be cleaning, donating and painting along with the usual household chores. I hope you have a lovely week.

"the house is driving me crazy."-Here too! It's out of control. Den gets upset if I move things so it is quite a struggle. And with Anna "collecting" for college, we live in a mess.

I will be going to work, every....single....day. Sigh. I cannot wait for a holiday weekend.

Sorry to hear bout your mom. I know she was happy to see you, even if she was feeling bad.

I wish it were raining here. It is HOT!

Jinmo: Also fitting around here is "Who'll Stop The Rain". Sorry to hear your vacation is over. :(

Cathy: Sounds like you'll be busy this week. I like your new avatar photo!

Sheila: A counter top over the washer and dryer would be convenient. I used to use my freezer as folding table, but it's not in the same room with the washer/dryer anymore. I wish it was.

SonyaAnn: Well, I'm getting nowhere fast. I'm only about 1/3 done with the kitchen. I don't know what's happened to me. I used to be able to clean a house in a matter of 2-3 hours. Of course, I was getting paid, so that probably made the difference.

Frances: I think she was glad to see us, but I think our visit tired her out, too. I think Dad was just as happy to see us. He takes excellent care of her, but I think he needs someone else to visit with now and then.

Rain songs huh?
Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head....reminds me of Paul Newman's blue eyes, so deep you could fall in and drown.lol

How about Blame it on the Rain...Milli Vanilli Frauds but cuties...lol

Or John Mayer's Covered in Rain. Hey, any song with the lyrics "At the CVS, by the checkout line
She puts her quiet hands in mine" speaks to my frugal couponing heart.lol
So what do all of these guys have in common? None of them are hard on the eyes.
And in the inimitable words of Lloyd Dobyns that Linda Ellerbee stole and used as her tagline, "And so it goes...." ;-)

Aw, I wish the best for your mom, and am sending prayers & good thoughts. ((hugs))

We've had 90 temps, which melts the snow & there's flooding all over. Plus? This past weekend it rained. All.weekend. 90's again by Wednesday.

I don't really have a 'rain song', but love the saying "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning to dance in the rain". I need to remember that more. ;-)
