Homemade Ginger Beer - Just Because I Could

Australian blogger Rhonda Hetzel has a very popular blog called down---to---earth.  I don't often comment there, but I read her blog posts daily.  She focuses on homemaking, gardening, repurposing and really, all aspects of simple living.  I think she's on a short hiatus right now, but if living simply appeals to you, you should check out her blog.

Several times she has mentioned making homemade ginger beer, which is somewhat like ginger ale.  I was so intrigued, I had to try it -- just because I could.  I've made two batches so far.  The first culture was made with fresh ginger and the second batch with ground (dry) ginger.  Both batches were good, the result being a lightly (and naturally) carbonated, refreshing, fermented drink.

My family's opinions on the drink varied.  Shane and I both enjoyed it, although he preferred the batch made with fresh ginger while I preferred the batch made with dry ginger.  Kat wouldn't even try it, and my daughter didn't care for it.  My son-in-law, however, said he liked it.  He's a ginger lover, so I wasn't surprised.

The entire process takes about 10-12 days, but it's a fun kitchen project and really not difficult at all.  If you're interested, here's the recipe from Rhonda's blog.

I recently found a recipe for homemade root beer, so I'm going to try that sometime soon.  Just because I can.

Hmmmm, that sounds pretty good.
I'm still working on a recipe for old oatmeal packets. I think that I've almost got it.

Did you try the root beer? Many years ago, we tierd a batch. We bottled it in long neck beer bottles. Several weeks later, they exploded inside the case, inside our laundry room. What a sticky mess. The kids still laugh about it.

OBQ: I haven't tried it yet. I think the same blogger who had this Ginger Beer recipe has one for Lemon Cordial (a similar lemon drink). Since I have lots of lemon juice, that will probably come before the root beer. I'll be on the lookout for bottle bombs! :)
