A Scare On My First Day

For about three hours yesterday I thought I was going to have to embarrass myself by posting that I was already unemployed. Fortunately, I still have my new job.

During "processing" (aka, the hiring process), we were told that our shift would be 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Yes, they were sure it applied to the initial five weeks of training. Apparently, there was a misunderstanding somewhere along the way. When we finally made it through orientation and got to our classrooms at around 12:30 yesterday afternoon, we were told that training was 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

I wasn't the only one who was steaming mad! It meant several of us would have to resign because we'd have to leave our homes at 5:30 in the morning and none of us could get daycare that early. In fact, a couple of women had given up other positions in the agency to "move up", only to be told they couldn't get those jobs back, either.

Enough of us complained that we were told someone would get back to us after the managers met to discuss it. When they did get back to us, they'd decided to change our training to the 7:30 start time after all.

Whew! That was close. But everything is back on track now.

Oh, being a mom who has to secure daycare, I would have been so upset.

Why do they do stuff like that?

Oh my word...No, if they had said the 7:30 start time...they would have stuck with it!!! SO glad it worked out for all of you!! Did you like it??

Lisa: Their reasoning for the 6:30 start was "that's the way we've always done it".

Donna: Apparently there was a miscommunication between the trainers and the hiring staff, but because the hiring staff had told so many of us 7:30, they kind of had to stick with it.

Tug: A neat option, in my department anyway, is that once you're trained, you can pick your own start time, on the half-hour anytime between 6:30 and 9:00. I'd actually love the 6:30 start if it weren't for the daycare issues.

Dannalie: Yes, it is early. Even with the 7:30 start, I'm leaving the house at 6:25. So I won't be rushed, I'm getting up at 4:30, and Kat has to get up at 5:45. I don't mind, but I think it's a bit on the early side for her.

Love that you have the options! I'm always at work by 6:30, but I don't have a child or the daycare to deal with.
