Hurry Up And Wait

This morning I completed the next step in the recruitment process for seasonal work at the IRS. I apparently passed the skills test and fingerprint check from the last session. This time I finished up paperwork, submitted a six page form for my background check, was allowed to choose a job from three different job descriptions, and had my ID photo taken.

I know what the job is (Tax Examiner), the hours (7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., M-F), the tentative start date (Jan. 22, 2008), and how long it's likely to last (4 to 6 months). What I don't know is if I'll get the job or not. I may not know for another 2 to 4 weeks.

Aah, bureaucratic red tape. Gotta love it.

What I do know for sure is that the guard at the security desk took away my little bitty Swiss Army knife. I could've taken it back out to the van, but since I hadn't used it in the two years I'd been carrying it, I just let him toss it.

Which means I'll be in dire need of it sometime next week.

Yeah, that's about how those things go. I carry a pocket knife around with me and usually I don't need it. But when I do, it's awful handy to have around. Enough so that I suppose... I carry it around all the time.

Sounds like you're good to go on that job, it's just a matter of time.

Donna: So far, so good. Still not missing it.

Dadguy: I think it's one of those Murphy's Law concepts.

Damn the luck on the knife.

You know, the security procedures at the airport always made me laugh. They take away liquids, tiny pocket knives, scissors, nail files, etc... then, they serve the passengers in first-class a full dinner with sharp silverware. DUH!

Dave: He also studied my driver's license and told me it was "flimsy". The first time they guard barely looked at it, and let me fly through with the SA knife. Maybe that's why he wasn't there this time?
