What?!

I have a question about my own pizza recipe: How do I get my 4-year-old granddaughter to eat it?

She won't eat pizza, no matter where it comes from or what toppings are on it. She used to love pizza a year or so ago, but now she won't touch it. Yet she likes lasagna, spaghetti and manicotti and she LOVES garlic bread.

She also isn't crazy about chocolate. She'll only eat it in small amounts and will pick a fruit-based candy over a chocolate bar. She prefers vanilla ice cream over any other flavor, and although she loved chocolate milk a year ago, she wants only plain white milk now. She'll eat most flavors of cake, but if it's chocolate, especially devil's food, she'll only eat the frosting. I have to admit that I'm the same way. I like it, but only a bite or two at at time.

Otherwise, she isn't that picky. It really depends on the day for her. She loves hamburgers, but if she's not in the mood for them the day I serve them, then she won't touch them.

That doesn't mean we cater to her, though. She still gets whatever Shane and I are having for our meal, which is sure to include at least one or two things she does like. And if she still doesn't want what we're having, she can have either a bowl of cereal or a peanut butter sandwich. Those are the choices, take them or go to bed hungry.

What about your kids? Are they picky eaters? Do any of them dislike typically kid-friendly foods? What do you do to get them to eat?

My daughter was never picky, but my nephews eat a lot of spaghetti...they don't like tacos, one doesn't like sauce on his pizza...I could go on.

No sauce on pizza? That reminds me, Kat also likes to eat her waffles with butter but no syrup. She's a strange little girl. ;)

More strangeness.

My heritage is Italian (my grandfather was an immigrant to this country) and I grew up on pizza. We never had sauce on it! Remember, this was in the 40's and 50's, but pizza dough was topped with a brushing of good olive oil, a few veggies (sliced mushrooms, onions and tomatoes), herbs, and a SPRINKLING of freshly-grated Parmesan. Then, a little more olive oil was poured over the top before baking.

To this day, I don't care for tomato sauce on pizza. It's not a deal-breaker, but the heavy mass of cheese that we Americans use on pizza is a real turnoff for me. Gentle Ben and I hardly ever eat pizza out...if we do, we ask for "no cheese." You can imagine the looks of amazement we get!

Our oldest is similar with pizza, or was for a while. She used to love it, then she stopped eating it entirely. We started with cheese bread and worked her back up to pizza. Her issues were with the sauce, she didn't trust it for some reason. Now she will eat cheese pizza from just about anywhere, but no toppings.

We just made sure to make some breadsticks or cheesy-bread out of some pizza dough at that point and she grew out of it.

Good luck.

I thought about trying cheesy bread. At least that way we'd know right away if the cheese is the issue.

I like the idea of "working back up to" pizza. I actually did something like that myself. I used to dislike spaghetti when I was younger (I'd eat it, but I never enjoyed it). Then one time my mom served it without meat and I liked it! I do eat it with meat now, but I've learned I like Ital. sausage with it much better than the hamburger my mom put in her sauce.

I'm with Kat... I prefer sweet or sour-y fruit candies over chocolate and I'm a purist when it comes to pancakes and waffles. However, I don't know that I've ever met a kid that didn't like pizza... What the heck?

Gay: Pizza with no sauce? That's the real deal, isn't it? I really should try it that way sometime.

My daughter Jean always preferred it with half the regular amount of cheese. Myself...I like it just about anyway it can be made.

Violet: I have a great recipe for "pure" pancakes that I'll try to post soon. The batter is made in a blender using whole wheat berries. They are fantastic.

It certainly isn't from me. As you can tell by my voluptuousness, I like food.

Jean: You were picky in your own way. No matter how much you liked a food, if you weren't in the mood for it on a given day, you simply weren't going to eat it.
